As part of global efforts to elevate traditional sports, a landmark event unfolded in the Republic of Tatarstan. Co-organized by the International Belt Wrestling Koresh Federation and the International Federation of Kyrgyz Kurosh—both active members of the World Ethnosport Union—the Tatar Koresh Belt Wrestling World Championship and the 3rd Kyrgyz Kurosh World Championship were successfully held from June 19–23, 2025, at the Saba Arena Sports Complex in the Sabinsky District. With participation from over 300 athletes representing 31 countries, the event made a strong contribution to the visibility and sustainability of traditional wrestling on the global stage.
Rooted in the ancient heritage of the Turkic peoples, Koresh wrestling impressed spectators with intense matches conducted on both sand and mat. Featuring youth and adult divisions, the tournament awarded 22 sets of medals, emphasizing the sport’s deep connection to endurance, skill, and balance. The event reaffirmed Koresh’s relevance as both a cultural tradition and a competitive discipline.
A historic milestone was achieved with the Kyrgyz Kurosh World Championship being held in Russia for the very first time. Organized by the International Federation of Kyrgyz Kurosh, also a member of the World Ethnosport Union, the competition’s preliminary rounds took place on June 21–22 at the Ak Bars Martial Arts Palace in Kazan, while the finals and award ceremonies were hosted on June 22 at a dedicated arena in the village of Minger. Athletes competed in eight male and three female weight categories, showcasing Kurosh’s refined techniques and elegant form.
Although Koresh and Kurosh differ in certain techniques—most notably, Kurosh permits leg-based maneuvers—both styles are founded on belt-grappling principles. These sports reflect the shared cultural heritage of Turkic and Central Asian communities, demonstrating the timeless value of traditional practices adapted for the modern world.
The event marked a significant achievement in cooperation between two World Ethnosport Union member organizations. Through strong institutional coordination, the championships served as a testament to the Union’s ongoing mission: to preserve traditional sports, expand their global reach, and promote intercultural dialogue. For the Union and its members, sport represents more than just competition—it is a cultural bridge uniting people and traditions across borders.
By integrating ancient sports into a modern sporting format, this Tatarstan-hosted event ensured that traditional wrestling remains relevant for future generations. The rising number of international participants highlighted the growing global appeal of these disciplines, while the event’s inclusive and diverse character offered a compelling example of how traditional sports can contribute to sports diplomacy and cultural continuity worldwide.
